Why are your athletes getting Overuse Injuries?

Do you have an athlete that is experiencing heel pain? How about knee pain? Or what about hip pain, lower back pain, upper back pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain or wrist pain?

Unless there was a serious injury that undoubtedly created this pain, these are all types of overuse injuries. These are SO common in sports, so what’s the reason?

WHY is this happening?

Let’s take a look at our “athletic pyramid” to get some answers…

  1. They’re not getting the right nutrition and hydration. They may be deficient in something like a mineral or some micronutrients, they might not be drinking enough water, or maybe they just aren’t eating enough great quality food. The problem is, this slows down recovery and there isn’t enough time between practices to get back to their base line. It becomes a downward spiral that leads directly to overuse injuries.

Knee Pain in Young Gymnasts

Welcome to the Gymnast Care Podcast where we talk about the most important ways to protect your gymnasts from injury! In today's episode we cover knee pain in young gymnasts.

Knee's are the hinge between the floor and the core and when used improperly can cause many devastating and painful injuries. Injuries in young gymnasts include Osgood-Schlatters disease, Sinding-Larsen-Johansson syndrome, and patellar tendonitis.

As gymnast get older, knee injuries can include more permanent injuries like an ACL tear, meniscal damage, or other ligament tear.

We need to teach right biomechanics now so injuries do not occur in the future.

What Back Pain Can Teach Us About Your Gymnast

"I was doing a punch front, and I wasn't tight. I punched the floor and immediately felt the pain in my back."

So what does back pain teach us about your gymnast?

What we've found over the past years working with gymnasts is this: Gymnastics is unforgiving to weakness. When your gymnast has a control issue of their body, gymnastics will exploit this and injury will soon follow. Back pain goes back to three issues:

  1. Overtraining
  2. Overuse
  3. Core Control

In the Gymnast Care Book on Injuries, We've created an entire chapter to back pain. We walk you through acute injury and overuse injury. We get into core control therapy, because we believe this is the root cause of back pain. As a parent, the best version of our Book on Injuries is the Video Edition so your athlete can follow along with the exercises. Get your Book on Injuries Video Edition now by clicking here.
