"I was doing a punch front, and I wasn't tight. I punched the floor and immediately felt the pain in my back."
What we've found over the past years working with gymnasts is this: Gymnastics is unforgiving to weakness. When your gymnast has a control issue of their body, gymnastics will exploit this and injury will soon follow. Back pain goes back to three issues:
In the Gymnast Care Book on Injuries, We've created an entire chapter to back pain. We walk you through acute injury and overuse injury. We get into core control therapy, because we believe this is the root cause of back pain. NUTRITION FOR GYMNASTS, EPISODE 1
In this particular episode, you will learn:
Swelling, tenderness, bruising. Almost every athlete has experienced these symptoms. I know I did. I was going up for a rebound in college and came down on a seven footers monstrous foot! I think he wore a size 18 and there was no getting around that thing! After the injury I went to an ankle specialist. He put me in an immobilizing walking boot and said to leave it on every day for a month. He said nothing about range of motion, rehab, or return to play. It took over a year to get back using my ankle and leg the way they were meant to be used. This is my story 16 years ago, but it sure sounds like the management athletes get now! The rest of this blog is based on an article by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Make sure you go to your primary care armed with information on ankle sprains and specifically ask to start rehabilitation immediately!
No matter the severity of an injury,...
